A Mining Bill & Water Protection
March 19, 2015
There is a chance some mining operations in the Southwestern United States will be suspended.
It’s all tied to a mining bill currently under proposal in New Mexico. The bill could result in some mining operations being suspended for up to 100 years. The mines could then reopen with no public notice.
Critics of the proposed bill say it could pose risks to groundwater in New Mexico.
Lawmakers have already been through a few rounds of debate on the bill. The proposed bill is being supported by lawyers for New Mexico’s largest copper mines. Opponents say if the bill becomes law, it will weaken critical elements that protect people and groundwater from pollution.
