Making Mining Safety a Priority

September 11, 2015

One state is taking a hard look at mining and how to improve safety in the industry.

The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy has announced it will soon have the most advanced mine emergency response equipment available for miners in the state.

Virginia officials say the efforts are being supported by a state training grant from The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The grant money, about $228,000, will be used for “state of the art emergency response communications equipment” and improvements in training in certification for miners.

State officials also say the communication equipment will be synchronized with the MSHA emergency response system.

As for the training, Virginia mine inspectors and trainers will be equipped with iPads to take to mineral mining sites. Miners will also be able to take training classes, certification tests and on-site retraining.

There should never be an end in the search to enhance and improve mining safety. Equipment plays a large role in safe mining operations.
